Last week 27,500 tons of durum wheat were delivered to the port of Cadiz from farms in the Cadiz, Seville and Huelva provinces to be sent to Tunisia. They will be used by the government there to make foods such as pasta and couscous.

BERGÉ was responsible for managing the consignment of the cargo ship and loading the goods at Cabezuela-Puerto Real quay in the Port of Cadiz, as well as giving the client access to the covered warehouses so that the wheat could be delivered before loading. This was a large-scale operation in which BERGÉ showed its great potential by managing to fully load the cargo ship in just four days.

Currently, the food and agriculture industry represents around 11% of Spanish gross domestic product (GDP) and Spain is the fourth biggest exporter of these products in the European Union. Within this sector, BERGÉ is considered to be one of the leading cargo handlers with 150 years’ experience in the maritime sector with more than three million tons of corn, wheat, sunflower, soy, rice and all kinds of flours passing through every year, which is stored in its more than 500,000 m2 covered storage space for products to be processed and controlled.

In addition to these figures, it should be added that BERGÉ is a company with certifications in GTP food safety (for the storage and transport of cereals, oilseeds, protein crops and other plant products), GMP+ (ensuring food safety), and also in ISO 9001 and 14001 management systems. Therefore, the company guarantees safety during handling processes (loading and unloading), storage and transport of such goods and offers all of its clients the necessary services for appropriate traceability and safety in all processes in the port logistics chain.

In addition, it is important to highlight the effort that the company is making in working on new systems which look after the environment, applying the best practices in its use of equipment and personnel teams to reduce the carbon footprint and save energy. All this, as part of the BERGÉ Management System, ensuring standards of quality, environmental care, and health and safety at work, with a comprehensive monitoring of the KPIs to be able to offer the best possible service.
