Sobrinos de Manuel Cámara, an operating subsidiary of BERGÉ in Pasaia, is working with the Pasaia Port Authority to treat water in order to boost sustainability in the port area.
The BERGÉ company will handle the management and maintenance of a new device installed at the Lezo 1 dock at the port, in line with the ‘Recommendation on coastal water quality in port areas’ issued by Puertos del Estado.
The system, called a hydrocyclone, collects water from precipitation that builds up on the land, which fails to soak into the ground and can end up transporting pollutants. This means it can be treated before it goes into the sea, reducing environmental pollution.
This helps to ensure the proper management of water on the ground, mainly rainwater that collects on the Lezo 1 dock, by separating sediment and other solid particles to protect the quality of the water in the bay.
‘Water is collected on the ground at the dock and, by means of a pumping station, is directed to this new treatment station, reducing the potential pollution from discharges by 85%’, says David Candelario, Director of Pasaia Port Authority.
The facility initially collects water from an area of 20,000m2 at Lezo 1. Over the course of 2025, works will take place to extend the area served by this new facility by 10,000m2, covering 75% of the Lezo 1 dock. Moreover, the port authority will implement this system gradually, as it completes surface renovations planned on the other docks at Pasaia Port.
The new facility set up by the Port Authority, financed through EU Next Generation funds as part of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, allows BERGÉ and its subsidiary, Sobrinos de Manuel Cámara, to actively contribute to the sustainability strategy of Puertos del Estado. One of the goals of this strategy is to achieve environmentally sustainable ports through efforts to reduce the impact of port activities on the quality of water, air, sediments, soil and acoustics.
In this way, Puertos del Estado’s strategy is linked to BERGÉ‘s Environmental Policy, under which the company commits to making efforts to optimise resources, management and waste reduction, and to reduce the impact of its activities.
