- At the forefront will be a containerised cargo service connecting Barcelona and Valencia with the main ports of the Asian country.
BERGÉ has reached an agreement with Indian company Seaport Lines—belonging to the Seapol Group—to become its agent in Spain. More specifically, it will offer a new containerised cargo service connecting Valencia and Barcelona with India, thereby contributing to the commercial development of Spain with the Asian country, already the fourth largest economy in the world, only surpassed by the United States, China and Germany. With this new connection, Valencia and Barcelona join other major ports with large exports to this country, such as the ports of Bilbao, Vigo or Algeciras.
This new collaboration reinforces BERGÉ’s extensive coverage from any of the Spanish ports where it operates to any Indian port destination, especially the largest ones such as Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Chennai.
BERGÉ will therefore accompany Seapol in its expansion plan throughout Europe at a time when bilateral trade between India and Spain has accelerated over the last decade, rising from 4.7 billion dollars to the current 7.25 billion dollars.
The main Spanish exports to the Indian market are beverages, machinery and mechanical equipment, chemicals, and plastics. In fact, Spain is already the 15th largest investor in India. Both Barcelona and Valencia play a key role in this regard. The port of Barcelona alone channels over 40% of the bilateral maritime trade between the two countries.
This relationship is set to grow in the coming years due to the search for new markets in the East, something that is being promoted by both the European Union and Spain itself with a view to diversifying its export revenue streams.
For BERGÉ, this agreement is a natural step in its strategy to connect Spanish exports with large international markets given its extensive presence in the main ports of Spain. Over the last 5 years it has reached several regular-line agreements with India and has extended the project cargo service with both India and China. It also has extensive experience in customs, both in the service itself and in the consultancy area, which is key in a global market with increasing uncertainty.
